Flooding has been reported in Providence, Cranston and elsewhere as a storm hits southern New England with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour.

The National Weather Service is warning of flash flooding mid-afternoon Wednesday in parts of Providence and Bristol counties. Forecasters are particularly concerned about urban areas in Cranston and Warwick. Flooding is also expected in communities including Barrington and Pawtucket.

The service says there is the potential for flash floods in the rest of the state.

Motorists are urged not to drive on flooded streets.

National Grid said about 500 customers were without power around noon Wednesday.

All high-speed ferry service to Block Island has been canceled, as have ferries between the island and Newport and Fall River, Massachusetts.
