UPDATE: 54-year-old Jon Main was arraigned at the Cranston Police station and was remanded to the ACI.

CRANSTON - In a Cranston neighborhood filled with animals, one family mourns the loss of a pet cat.

"He was a friendly cat. You would go right up to him, he would rub up against your leg... It's just heartbreaking," said owner Sheri Domenico.

Police responded to her home on Sumner Avenue Friday afternoon. after hearing reports that Stubby the cat had been shot with a bb gun one backyard over from his home of nearly 10 years.

"I don't know why he would shoot him, he was just next door. I heard a pop, I was on the porch," said Tiffany Domenico.

"He came to my house and he was gasping for air and he just died. He came home to die," said Sheri.

Police arrested a 54 year old man, now facing charges for the malicious killing of an animal, and firing in a compact area.

Subb's owners say they believe the cat must have just wandered into the neighboring backyard.

Police say the man originally denied shooting the animal, and the family says he claimed he thought it was a woodchuck.

"I just want him to have justice. He shouldn't have died. He was a good cat," said Tiffany.

If convicted, the man faces up to three years in prison and $1,500 in fines.

He could be one of just a handful of Rhode Islanders to receive jail time for animal abuse charges.
