ATTLEBORO, MA- It was a crash that woke neighbors from their sleep.

"It was trying to put on its break and it screeched for the longest time and then you hear bang, bang; so you can hear that it was ricocheting off of something," said Dorothy Scott.

Dorothy and Tony Scott have witnessed numerous accidents over the last decade in front of their home near the intersection of Washington Street and Mendon Road, but Saturday night was the worst crash they'd ever seen.

Scott added, "There was just so much smoke; you didn't know who was in the car or how many people were in the car.

A 37–year–old man and his 40–year–old passenger were inside the white Mitsubishi convertible, which caught fire.

Dorothy and others were trying to figure out how to save them.

Scott was able to help save the passenger because she was the only one who knew where the fire extinguishers were located.

"No one knew where the fire extinguishers were and I said, ‘they're across the street at Hess gas station,' so I ran across to Hess gas station, grabbed two fire extinguishers," said Scott.

Badly injured, both men were pulled out of the car. The driver later died at the hospital.

When asked about his wife's quick–thinking, Tony Scott says it didn't surprise him.

Scott said, "She always wants to be involved, always wants to try and help. She always has a habit of kind of knowing what to do also."

Moments before the accident there was a hit and run in Pawtucket. Witnesses told police they believe it was the same car.

Both accidents are still being investigated.

The driver struck at that red light on Route 1 did go to the hospital with minor injuries.

The passenger's condition is unknown at this time.
