PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island's attorney general is offering advice to consumers this week to help them avoid fraud and scams. Attorney General Peter Kilmartin will share a daily ``video tip'' through Twitter and his website (www.riag.ri.gov) to mark ``National Consumer Protection Week,'' which runs through March 7.
Kilmartin's office says the videos will remind consumers how to protect their privacy, avoid identity theft and protect themselves against fraud and scams. Kilmartin says his office's Consumer Protection Unit receives thousands of calls and emails every year from residents who are concerned about scams and identity theft. He says the unit provides information and referral services to the public. Kilmartin has hosted ``shred-a-thon'' events to mark the week in past years, but this year's shred-a-thon will be held in May because of weather concerns.
