Small businesses line Main Street in West Warwick. Enso Spa and Bodyworks is one of them. They advertise themselves as a legitimate day spa, but they've been operating without a massage parlor license, offering more than just deep tissue work.
"They were under the radar and obviously like prostitution and the other massage parlors, the customers aren't complaining, they're gravitating towards that business for that reason," says community activist Carolyn Medieros.
Medieros say's she is not surprised to see a business like Ensos doing so much to look legitimate. They went so far as to have ads in a magazine, create a Facebook page and at one point even a web-site.
West Warwick police weren't fooled. Going in undercover, Officers were able to arrest 2 women on prostitution charges and a third on operating the massage parlor without a license. Medieros says there needs to be an intervention because it's out of control at this point.
She say's she has seen this kind of operation too many times before. Although police are continually cracking down on the physical locations where prostitution is happening, Medieros says until authorities get a better grasp on shutting down well-known online-sites where prostitution thrives, the problem will remain.
Medieros says, "Prosecute those who are in control of sites like backpage.com and those involved in the act of victimizing the girls."
