PROVIDENCE, R.I. — With the holidays just around the corner, the US Postal Service is gearing up for the busiest mailing day of the year Monday.

Post offices’ across Southern New England are taking all the necessary steps to handle all the holiday traffic.

Things were in full swing at the Post Office Regional Headquarters in Providence as workers prepared for their busiest day of the year.

Nationwide, 611 million packages are expected to pass through post offices Monday, and about 3 million will go through the Regional Headquarters facility in Providence.

"There are deadlines for us. Tomorrow, first class mail, you really want to get it home, we need to get that in the system, packages by Wednesday the 21st. You know, we’re here and we’re working around the clock to make sure we get everything out there to the carriers so they can get it home for our customers," said Rick Goodwin; Facility General Manager.

Therefore, if you have been waiting until the last minute to mail something out, make sure you get to the post office sooner rather than later.

The facility has already processed 4.5 million letters from this weekend Monday morning, and things are not slowing down anytime soon.

In fact, Wednesday will be the busiest delivery day as 3 million packages will be delivered from the Post Office Regional Headquarters facility to Rhode Island, Cape Cod and Southeastern Massachusetts.
