PROVIDENCE, R.I. –Care New England made a big announcement on its future on Wednesday.
The hospital group which runs four hospitals in the State says it has signed a letter of intent to merge with Partners Healthcare of Massachusetts.
With a current relationship with Brigham and Women's Hospital, this agreement gives exclusive rights to Partners.
“The landscape of the state’s hospitals continues to be fluid in this challenging healthcare marketplace where healthcare systems are striving to provide the highest quality of care and services to their patients and the community. In recent years, we have seen several new players enter the Rhode Island market in response to the evolving health care industry. As one of the two state offices charged with the regulation of hospital conversions, we look forward to learning more about and evaluating the proposed transactions and their impact on the state’s hospitals, patients and the communities they serve,” said Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin.
Care New England also announced it is exploring the sale of Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket.
That deal is in the works with California-based Prime Health Care which currently owns Landmark Hospital in Woonsocket.
