PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WLNE) — A high ranking Portsmouth police officer arrested on domestic assault charges plead not guilty in court Monday morning.

Lieutenant George Grassi was released on $1,000 dollars personal recognizance and was ordered to not have contact with a woman he used to live with.

Grassi was arrested after a reported violence during a car ride on I-95 from Providence to Newport earlier this month.

The woman he lived with was treated at Newport Hospital for minor injuries.

Grassi is a 17 year veteran of the force and heads the patrol division.

He has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

Grassi is due back in court later this month.
