WYOMING, R.I. (AP) — A Westerly man was shooting an AR-15 rifle when his stray rounds hit a McDonald’s Thursday evening, damaging windows and walls inside of the restaurant.
Shawn G. Lucente, 26, legally owns his rifle and was shooting it at targets on a remote part of Richmond Sand and Stone’s property, where he is an employee.
No one was injured in the incident.
Police responded to the McDonald’s at the corner of Kingston Road and Stilson Road in Wyoming after an employee reported that someone shot a pellet through one of their windows.
Once police arrived, they heard gun shots nearby.
They spoke to nearby witnesses who pointed in the direction of Lucente.
Lucente had permission to shoot on the property, and was unaware that his stray rounds were traveling beyond the property.
One of his rounds traveled 1,950 feet, hit the glass window, and traveled across the dining room where it hit a wall.
Lucente was arrested and charged with Firing in a Compact Area and Firing Across Highways Prohibited.
He will appear in court on June 15, 2017.
