PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Shawn Haviland turned in a sharp start, but the Pawtucket Red Sox suffered a late loss, 6-4, to the Norfolk Tides on Saturday night at McCoy Stadium.

Pawtucket (50-48) led 4-2 with two outs and two strikes in the top of the ninth, but Tides (43-57) cleanup man Pedro Alvarez laced a grand slam on a line to right field to stun a sell-out crowd of 11,244 and hand the PawSox their third consecutive loss at the outset of the four-game series.

In his first start since July 2 — before he landed on the disabled list — Haviland logged 6.2 innings of one-run ball in which he fanned four against just one walk. Haviland stifled the Tides just five days after he returned from the disabled list in a relief role and delivered 6.1 shutout stanzas against Toledo. Right-hander Jamie Callahan then allowed a run in 1.1 innings, and Austin Maddox (L, 2-2) walked two and ceded two hits, including Alvarez’ slam, in the ninth.

Norfolk starter Chris Lee only allowed an infield single through four innings in which he faced the minimum 12. From there, however, Lee was tagged for five more hits and four runs (three earned) while only recording one out in the fifth. Reliever Paul Fry (W, 3-2) grabbed the win, and Richard Rodriguez (S, 5) sealed the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth.

PawSox designated hitter Bryce Brentz went 2-for-4 with his 21st home run of the season. Rehabbing Red Sox infielder Josh Rutledge played his seven scheduled innings at second base and went 0-for-3 at the plate.

Norfolk broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when shortstop Paul Janish tagged an RBI single up the middle to make it 1-0.

The PawSox, however, went to the work in the bottom half of the fifth. Brentz clobbered a solo blast to start the frame and tie the game. A Norfolk error then allowed third baseman Rafael Devers to score, and catcher Dan Butler followed with an RBI single pulled through the left side. Center fielder Aneury Tavarez then yanked an RBI base knock into right to stretch the gap to 4-1.

Maddox recorded two outs with one on in the ninth, but the Tides then loaded the bases with a single and a walk before Alvarez ripped a rocket to right to push Norfolk ahead.

The PawSox conclude their four-game weekend series with the Norfolk Tides on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. at McCoy Stadium. PawSox left-hander Brian Johnson (3-1, 2.68) is scheduled to oppose Tides righty Alec Asher (1-1, 2.25). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the PawSox Pre-Game Show at 1:05 p.m.

The seven-game homestand runs through Sunday. Good seats are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games. Fans can also call (401) 724-7300 or log on to PawSox.com for tickets.
