PawSox Score 6 in the 6th to Beat Mud Hens in Toledo
PawSox news release...
TOLEDO, Ohio — Jalen Beeks shined over six strong innings, and the Pawtucket Red Sox offense backed him up with a six-run sixth en route to a 7-1 victory over the Toledo Mud Hens on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.
After going down 1-0 in the first, the PawSox (52-50) sent 10 to the plate in the sixth and posted a half-dozen runs to down the Mud Hens (44-57) for their second consecutive win ahead of Thursday’s series finale.
Beeks (W, 4-4) stacked up eight strikeouts over his six frames, allowing just five hits, a walk and a run. After ceding a pair of hits in the first inning, Beeks retired nine consecutive Mud Hens across the first and fourth innings. The 24-year old former Arkansas Razorback has struck out 58 — against just 18 walks — in his 56 Triple-A innings and has notched a sturdy 2.89 ERA. Left-hander Robby Scott worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning in his fourth appearance (all scoreless) since his option, and righty Austin Maddox stamped the victory with a pair of shutout innings.
Pawtucket pounded out a well-rounded 13-hit effort, headlined center fielder Rusney Castillo (3-for-5, 2 R, HR, RBI), in addition to right fielder Aneury Tavarez (2-for-5), shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin (2-for-4, R) and first baseman Sam Travis (2-for-4, R, RBI, BB).
Toledo starter Myles Jaye (L, 1-4) gave up eight hits and five runs (four earned) in five frames.
Toledo placed runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the first, and cleanup man Jim Adduci netted a run with an RBI groundout to second.
The PawSox exploded in the top of the sixth when Lin, Castillo, designated hitter Bryce Brentz and Travis strung together four straight singles and capitalized on a pair of Toledo errors to make it 3-1. Left fielder Steve Selsky then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, and, two batters later, catcher Tim Roberson stroked a two-run double into the right-field corner to extend the gap to 6-1.
In the top of the ninth, Castillo took the second pitch of the frame and launched it to left field for his 11th home run of the season — second-most on the squad.
Pawtucket continues its eight-game road trip Thursday at 7:05 p.m. against the Toledo Mud Hens. Rehabbing Red Sox starter Roenis Elias is scheduled to oppose Mud Hens righty Buck Farmer (3-4, 4.53). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the PawSox Pre-Game Show at 6:35 p.m.
The PawSox return home next Tuesday (August 1) to begin a three-game series through Thursday.
