DORCESTER, Mass. (WLNE) — The Attleboro man who hit and seriously injured a 12-year-old girl over the weekend in South Boston is being held without bail.

78-year-old Richard Higgins is being held pending his dangerousness hearing Thursday.

Police say Higgins was driving his SUV with a suspended license on Old Colony Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle.

He swerved to the right and hit Shaelynn Bobbitt who was walking down the street, and kept driving.

A spokesman for the District Attorney’s Office says Higgins has four drunken driving convictions on his record.

Bobbitt is still recovering at Tufts Medical Center. She suffered a head injury and lacerated liver.

She is expected to undergo surgery.
