PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WLNE) — Police are warning Portsmouth residents about a man who approached an elderly woman at her home and allegedly impersonated a police officer.

An unidentified elderly woman told Portsmouth Police an unknown male drove to her home in the area of Cory’s Lane and identified himself as an officer.

He asked her personal questions, such as how old she is, and if she lives alone.

Despite identifying himself as an officer, the suspect who was seen wearing a ‘police’ baseball cap did not show any identification or provide his name.

Authorities said the suspect is described as a light skinned black male, and was seen driving a dark colored SUV with unknown registration.

Anyone with information or observed any person matching this description is strongly encouraged contact The Portsmouth Police Department at 401-683-0300.
