PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A woman has died after being struck by a garbage truck Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Providence Police Department, 51-year-old Migdalia Gonzalez of Providence was struck at the intersection of Hartford Avenue and Whelan Road.

Crime scene tape and police cruisers sealed a portion of Hartford Ave Wednesday afternoon as accident reconstruction crews worked to determine what caused a garbage truck driver to hit-and-kill the 51-year-old woman who was crossing the street.

Roberto Vega lives across the street from the crash site and he told ABC6 News that the woman lived in his building.

“I just heard the commotion and I came out,” said Vega. “It wasn’t good.”

The crash happened a little after 1:30 p.m. It is not clear at this point if Gonzalez was in the crosswalk or if the driver of the garbage truck was speeding.

“We’re going to be reviewing some video, some surveillance video that’s on the housing projects,” said police.

The victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The crash is still under investigation not clear at this point if charges will be filed.
