LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) — Hurricane Irma having a huge impact on the state of Florida and on a transplanted Rhode Islander now living in Florida. His family was here for a funeral and now they're stuck, not sure of when they'll be able to go back and what they'll be returning home to.
Hurricane Irma pummeling through the Sunshine State, leaving destruction in its path. Destruction that Florida residents will soon have to clean up.
"I've never experienced anything like this and from what I'm seeing its horrendous," says Carlos Orejuela.
The Lincoln native has been living in Delray Beach, Florida for 7 years. He's riding out the storm here in Rhode Island.
"I can only imagine what people are going through, being scared," he says.
He's been getting pictures and videos from friends who chose to stay in Florida showing the heavy rain and high winds, but he has no clue what he'll be going home to since his family didn't have time to board up their house or protect their belongings.
"I'm scared, I'm scared about all of my stuff. I was thinking that maybe the roof was going to get ripped off stuff like that but so far from what my friends have been showing me the area where I live and work its just a lot of trees a lot of brush and everything," says Orejuela.
Orejuela, along with his wife and son, is still not sure when they'll even be able to get back to Florida to check on all of the damage.
