SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The kids are back to school, the beach days are numbered, and fall is "unofficially" underway.

So, what's next?  Pumpkins, cider donuts, and apple picking might come to mind.

Jaswell's in Smithfield is a popular spot for picking your own fruit.  They've been around a while.

Chris Jaswell, owner of Jaswell’s, says, “My family's owned it since 1899.  I'm the 4th generation.”

They grow a lot of fruits and vegetables there.  The summer berry season is wrapping up, and now they're diving into apples.  Last year was tough for the area.

Jaswell says, “We lost about 80% of the crop, and it affected us primarily because we're a big pick–your–own and fall destination.”

This year is different.

Jaswell says, “It's a bumper crop.  Fantastic.”

Of course, it's all about the weather.

Jaswell’s Retail Employee Colleen Elmer says, “If you get a lot of rain, it might harm the berries because they don't like that.  If you don't get enough rain, it'll harm the apples because they like rain.”

On a Tuesday afternoon, things weren't so crazy.

Elmer says, “Weekends... late September into early October are definitely busiest. It's insane for a few weeks.”

I did manage to find a few folks out picking apples for the first time this year: Ashley Gammino and Dakota Thatcher from Narragansett.  I asked what they plan to do with all the apples they pick today.

Gammino says, “Pie - just fresh apples - we juice - smoothies.”

Thatcher says, “I like coming especially for the apple cider donuts.  That's my thing.”

If you want the apple flavor, but you don't want to do the work, you can check out their farm stand.
