PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) -- At a time when other districts in the state are handing out pink slips and closing schools, the Providence Public School District is looking for more help.

"It did surprise me that they were hiring for so many positions,” said Bonny Lee of Providence. “I didn't know that they needed people so badly."

The district is looking for teachers from kindergarten to 12th grade.

They are also looking for school nurses, psychologists, teaching assistants , bus monitors, and crossing guards -- a position Bonny Lee is hoping to land.

"I love kids,” said Lee. “I take care of my grand-kids all the time. I'm just family oriented and like to help out everyone."

The district says they need employees each year due to retirements and turnover.

This year they have a particular interest in teacher candidates with a STEM background, as well as teachers who hold English-as-a-Second-Language certifications.

Dozens of counselors were on hand Friday to help walk applicants through the online process.

" Today was awesome,” said lee. “I walked right in. Everybody was really friendly and helpful and I'm excited. I hope i get the job!"

There are 41 schools in the Providence Public School District.  The district is looking to fill over 140 positions.
