PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – As Rhode Island tackles an opioid epidemic, medical officials hope to remind Rhode Islanders of an over-the-counter overdose reversal drug that is available in most Rhode Island local pharmacies.
The life-saving drug Narcan® is one medication that can be used to treat overdose and prevent death by opioids. Earlier this year, the Surgeon General called for Narcan to be available to not only first responders, but also the general public.
According to officials, Narcan® is covered by most insurances and is available for purchase over the counter. Pharmacies such as CVS often have Narcan® in store for day-of dispensing or can order it for the next business day. Anyone that uses Narcan to administer to someone experiencing an overdose is legally protected by the Good Samaritan Act.
