NORTH KINGSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – This week The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is warning the public that weed control treatments will be released into Silver Spring Lake.

The invasive weeds the DEM are attempting to control are milfoil and fanwort.

The DEM say “the weed control treatments are specifically targeted for the weeds that infest the pond and do not harm fish or other aquatic species.”

Treatments will begin on Wednesday, June 13, by Solitude Lakes Management to control applications.

The second treatment is expected to occur in Fall 2018.

Signs including the information about the temporary water restriction will be posted around the lake, but the ask that residents refrain from fishing and other activities at the pond during this time.

The DEM say “this lake is stocked with trout several times during the year. However, the Department will not be stocking additional trout until treatments are concluded for the year.”

This weed removal is being executed to ensure proper function and management of the lake continues.
