Rhody's Matthews Joins Grizzlies Summer League Team
Former Rhode Island guard E.C. Matthews has been named to the Memphis Grizzlies 2018 Summer League Mini-Camp roster, the NBA team announced Tuesday.
Matthews - the third-leading scorer in Rhode Island history with 1,899 career points - is one of 17 players on the Memphis roster. The list of players includes the fourth overall pick, Jaren Jackson, Jr., and Jevon Carter, who was taken with the No. 32 selection.
One of the greatest players in program history, Matthews was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship, leading Rhode Island to the second tournament title in program history. Named to the A-10 all-conference team four times, Matthews earned third-team honors in 2017-18 for the second straight season. He was a second-team pick as a sophomore and an all-rookie selection in 2013-14, when he was the co-rookie of the year.
In addiiton to helping the Rams advance to the second round of the NCAA Championship in each of the last two seasons, Matthews finshed his career as the only player in program history to score 1,800 points, grab 500 rebounds and dish out 200 assists.
Matthews will join the Grizzlies for five practice sessions from Thursday, June 28 through Saturday, June 30. Following mini-camp, the team will compete in the 2018 Utah Jazz Summer League from July 2-5, playing games against the Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz. The team will then travel to Las Vegas for the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2018. Each team will play a minimum of five games during the 12-day, 82-game competition, starting with three preliminary games between July 6-10 before being seeded in a tournament that starts on July 11 and concludes with the Championship Game on Tuesday, July 17.
Former Rhode Island player Matthew Butler - who played two seasons with the Rams before transferring to Tennessee-Martin - also will be in camp with the Grizzlies.
