SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - Police have identified the woman who died after being found unresponsive in a South Kingstown pond Wednesday.

Police said Judith Barnett, 78, of South Kingstown,  had been swimming with her granddaughter in Larkin's Pond shortly before 4:00 p.m. Wednesday when Barnett’s granddaughter alerted the lifeguard that her grandmother required assistance.  

The lifeguard swam to Barnett's location and removed her from the water. 

Police said the lifeguard determined that Barnett was not breathing and began administering CPR until Union Fire District members and South Kingstown EMS responded to continue rescue efforts.  

Police said responding officers attempted to use an AED in their resuscitation efforts.  

Barnett was transported to South County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m.

According to Police an autopsy by an RI DoH Medical Examiner determined Barnett's death to be consistent with a drowning accident.

There is no criminal investigation and no suspicious activity suspected at this time.
