LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) – A Woonsocket woman was arrested on DUI charges after driving intoxicated with five children in her vehicle.

State Police said Leah B. Duran, 41, of Woonsocket, was arrested around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday after beach staff alerted park police to a potentially intoxicated woman preparing to leave Lincoln Woods State Park with children, ranging in age from 7 months to 10 years old, in her car.

When officers from the DEM confronted Duran, she reportedly attempted to flee, backing into one of the officers’ trucks.

State troopers from the Lincoln Woods Barracks arrested Duran and charged her with Driving Under the Influence. State Police said consecutive tests of Duran’s blood alcohol content indicated levels of 0.279 and 0.277, more than three times the legal limit.

Duran was arrested and processed at the Lincoln Woods Barracks and faces the following charges and citations:

  • Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Liquor or Drugs, first offense, BAC .15 or Greater with a Child Under the Age of Thirteen
  • Driving with Suspended/Revoked/Canceled License
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Evidence of Insurance
  • Reasonable and Prudent Speeds – Failure to Maintain
  • License to be Carried-Exhibited on Demand

State Police said Duran was released and is expected in Third District Court on July 24th.

The children were turned over to relatives and the DCYF was notified.
