PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Crews responded to a fire at Vartan Gregorian Elementary School in Providence Wednesday morning after a fire broke out in a classroom.

Firefighters responded around 9:30 a.m. and took 45 minutes to put out the fire.

Acting Deputy Assistant Chief Steve Capracotta said five school personnel were inside at the time and escaped safely after hearing the fire alarms.

The fire started in a classroom and damaged several other classrooms and a hallway.

Capracotta said teachers are planning to have the damage repaired in time for the start of the school year.

No word yet on what caused the fire.
