Brown Sets School Record For Non-League Wins With 75-67 Win Over Maine
Providence, R.I. – Brown stayed undefeated at home and posted its school record 10thnon-league win with a hard fought 75-67 win over Maine at the Pizzitola Sports Center behind sophomore Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN), who scored 13 of his team high 19 points in the opening half.
The Bears, winners of 10 of their last 12 games, improve to 10-4 overall, including six straight home wins to open the season, while Maine falls to 2-13 overall.
“I’m certainly glad we won,” said Brown head coach Mike Martin. “We let our guard down in the second half and Maine hurt us in the paint. When we play with passion and spirit we can play with anyone, but we have to sustain that level for 40 minutes. Winning 10 non-conference games is terrific for our program.”
Getting the 10thnon-league win certainly wasn’t easy for the Bears. Brown led by 14 points at the half, 38-24, and by as many as 19 points in the second half, 53-34, on back-to-back treys by Cambridge and junior Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT) at the 14:54 mark.
Maine came storming back with a 29-12 run and pulled to within two points, 65-63, on a three-point play by Andrew Fleming with 2:45 left in the game.
A 6-0 Brown run behind two free throws by sophomore Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA), two more by senior Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) and a layup by Joshua Howard (Charlotte, NC) extended Brown’s lead to 71-63 with 48-seconds remaining, putting the game out of reach.
The Bears connected on 19-of-20 free throws for the game, including 8-of-8 in the final 2:15. Maine converted 15-of-23 free throws.
Cambridge had 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field, while Hunsaker finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Choh added 11 points for the Bears, while Howard had 10 points and a team high five rebounds.
Bears’ junior Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) finished with eight points, connecting on all four of his free throws in the final 39 seconds.
Fleming’s 21 points paced three Black Bears in double figures, connecting on 7-of-14 field goals and grabbing seven rebounds. Isaiah White (20 points) and Sergio El Darwich (15 points) also scored in double figures for the Black Bears.
Brown held Maine scoreless for the game’s first five minutes and built a 19-3 lead following a trey by senior Chris Sullivan (Wilmette, IL) with 12:17 left in the opening half.
The Black Bears came roaring back and cut Brown’s lead to eight points, 28-20, with 4:08 remaining in the half on a layup by El Darwich.
Brown led by 14 points at the half when Cambridge hit a 40-foot trey at the buzzer for a 38-24 lead at intermission.
The Bears continue their non-league slate, traveling to Buffalo, NY on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to face Canisius. Tip-off is 7:00 pm at the Kessler Athletic Center with broadcast on ESPN+ and WPRV AM-790.
