1 dead, 5 injured after car smashes into Smithfield Subway shop

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — One person is dead and five were injured after a car crashed into a Subway sandwich shop in Smithfield.

According to the Smithfield Deputy Fire Chief Steven Quattrini, their department received multiple 911 calls reporting a white Volvo that drove into the sandwich shop in the Apple Valley Mall.

Two people were trapped under the car when first responders arrived at the crash just before 3 p.m.

Quattrini said one person was pronounced dead on scene. That person’s name was not released.

He said four people were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver, a man, was taken to Miriam Hospital.

Quattrini said initial reports indicate the driver was speeding when he crashed into the store.

ABC 6 News crews were on the scene where multiple police cruisers, fire engines and officials from the medical examiner’s office were investigating.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
