1 million dollar lottery ticket goes unclaimed one year later

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE)- Nearly one year ago a $1,000,000 winning Mega Millions ticket was sold at a gas station in North Smithfield.

Here’s the catch- no one ever claimed the prize money.

The winning ticket expires on Wednesday, March 17. Until then, the ticket can still be claimed.

Under lottery rules, players have one year from the date of the drawing to claim their prize. If no one claims it, the money will go into the states general fund, which goes to local programs such as schools and parks.

“We’re really doing everything in our power to make sure that this prize gets claimed and that’s a million dollars out there that we don’t want someone to miss out on. Its a life changing amount of money,” said Rhode Island Lottery spokesperson Melissa Juhnowski.

If you bought a lottery ticket about one year ago and think you may have the winning ticket, you are strongly encouraged to go to RILOT.com to check the numbers.
