15-month-old girl killed after being attacked by family dog in East Providence
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- A 15-month-old girl has died after she was attacked by a family dog in East Providence Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 2:45 PM, East Providence Police responded to a home on Brookhaven Drive for reports of a disturbance. When officers arrived, they found a 15-month-old had been attacked by a dog.
Police said the child sustained significant injuries and first responders immediately began life-saving procedures. She was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
Two adult family members also sustained injuries during the attack after attempting to intervene and were transported to Rhode Island Hospital.
The dog is described as a pit bull-type breed and was euthanized by police in the backyard of the home following the attack.
East Providence Police Chief William Nebus told ABC6 the dog belonged to the grandparents of the 15-month-old girl. She was over the house getting babysat, he said.
“It started out like any other day, where a parent dropped their child off at their grandparents’ house for babysitting and a visit. During lunchtime, there was some food set on the table outside, and the baby was crawling around in the yard where the dog had free reign, it was a fenced-in yard, and the dog just, unprovoked, went after the child.”
Chief Nebus was on scene and called the situation a tragedy. He said the investigation showed that the attack was completely unprovoked, and the child wasn’t pulling on the dog or reaching for any food.
“It was horrific, I mean, everybody’s imaginations can run wild and it still wouldn’t be the true picture of what was there and seen by the officers that arrived first.”
Police say they are not aware of any prior incidents involving the dog.
A GoFundMe has been created to help the family cover funeral costs.
