19-year-old released on bail in Warwick crash that killed one, injured three

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – A 19-year-old from Warwick went before a judge Tuesday after being charged in a fatal crash on Post Road that claimed the life of one person and injured three, including himself.

Jacob Pelliccio was charged with Driving to Endanger Resulting in Death, Driving to Endanger Personal Injury (2 counts), DUI, and Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test.

Warwick police responded to the crash just before 4 a.m. Sunday and found Pelliccio behind the wheel of a 2003 Buick that had crashed into a bridge abutment on Post Road at the North Kingstown line.

In court Tuesday, police said officers at the scene witnessed Pelliccio had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech and smelled strongly of alcohol. Pelliccio refused a chemical test, but was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for his injuries where his blood was tested. The toxicology report is pending.

The accident reconstruction team said Pelliccio was driving at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash.

“The defendant was operating his vehicle, he was traveling southbound on Post Road, traveling at speeds of approximately 78 miles per hour. The vehicle collided with a guard rail, subsequently, head-on into a bridge structure,” a Warwick Police officer said in court.

“Both the officers at the scene detected a strong smell of alcohol beverage emanating from Mr. Pelliccio’s breath. The defendant stated he had consumed alcohol beverages prior to the accident. Located within the vehicle was evidence of the presence of alcohol, as well as the presence of marijuana use.”

One passenger, 19-year-old Michaela Lynch of Warwick, was transported to Kent County Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Lynch had graduated from Toll Gate High School this year and was working at an assisted living facility and as a hairdresser at a salon in North Kingstown.

Two other passengers, a 19-year-old male and a 21-year-old male, were both injured in the crash and were transported to Rhode Island Hospital. Police said one sustained a brain injury, and the other sustained a bruised lung and a laceration to the head.

Pelliccio was also injured and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

He was arraigned Tuesday in Kent County District Court and was released on $10,000 surety bail. He’ll be back in court on January 25, 2021.
