The flu has now claimed 2 lives in Rhode Island this season.

The Rhode Island Department of Health released the information today about two men who died in January from the flu.

One man, in his 50s and with underlying medical conditions, died on January 1.

A second man in his 80s also had underlying medical conditions, and died on January 25.

“This is a very sad reminder that influenza is a serious illness,” said Director of Health Michael Fine, M.D.

The dominant strain in both Rhode Island and the rest of the nation is H1N1, which affects children and young adults more than any other age group.

To date, there have been 129 flu-related hospitalizations in Rhode Island.
