PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – Two men were rescued from the Providence River Friday evening after their boat tipped over between the Washington and Steeple street bridges.

Crews were called to the scene around 7 p.m., according to Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Brian Mahoney.

Upon arriving on scene firefighters were able to quickly throw an inflatable raft to the men to pull them out of the water.

The boat is still currently in the river but will be pulled out by Saturday morning at the latest, according to Mahoney.

Mahoney said the cause of the boat sinking appeared to be an “operating error.”

The two men were not injured.
