2 RI Students Named 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WLNE) – Two Rhode Island students have been named members of the 2019 class of U.S. Presidential Scholars.
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced Tuesday that two Rhode Island high school seniors are among the 161 students recognized for their accomplishments in academics, the arts and career and technical education fields.
Yiru Yi, of Lincoln, a senior at Lincoln High School and Everett Thornton Smith of Warwick, a senior at The Wheeler School will be among those honored in a ceremony in June. They will each receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion.
“I want to congratulate this year’s class of Presidential Scholars on their achievement both inside of the classroom and out,” said DeVos. “Their hard work and commitment to excellence, no matter what challenge they are tackling, will serve them well throughout their lifelong learning journeys. I have no doubt that many of tomorrow’s leaders are among this year’s class of Scholars.”
