WEST BATH, Maine (WLNE)- A Maine couple was shot by their two-year-old son early Wednesday morning.

The toddler picked up the handgun from the nightstand and shot his mother and father, according to Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry.

Both parents survived but suffered injuries. The 22-year-old mother sustained a leg wound and the 25-year-old father was shot in the head.

The little shooter was struck in the face by the gun’s recoil.

The family was transported to a local hospital, where all injuries were deemed to be non-life-threatening, according to police.

“The question of how the boy was able to pick up and fire the weapon is of great concern and is being investigated. This situation, while disturbing, could have had an even more tragic ending. We are thankful that the injuries were not more serious,” Merry said.
