PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- On Thursday at 5 PM, the State House Christmas tree will be lit and holiday celebrations will begin—hosted by Governor McKee and the first family.

Two trees will be on display this year, one artificial tree and one grown in Scituate. The First Family will light the tree at approximately 6:15 PM.

During the tree lighting, the Governor and First Lady will read “The Night Before Christmas.” Performances by multiple local artists will be a part of Thursday’s festivities.

All Rhode Islanders are invited. Attendees are requested to bring an unwrapped gift that will be donated to local charities.

The event will be held on the South Lawn of the State House pending inclement weather.
