3 new charter schools approved to open in Providence

PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – Three new charter schools have been given the green light to open in the capital city.

Rhode Island’s Council on Elementary and Secondary Education gave the final approval last night to Excel Academy, Nuestro Mundo Public Charter School, and Providence Preparatory Charter School.

Excel Academy will open in the Fall of 2022 while the other two will open in the Fall of 2021.

Each school is allowed to operate for a maximum term of five years.

Meanwhile, plans to purchase part of the Old Saint Joseph’s Hospital to house the new Excel Academy are moving forward.

A Board of Trustees has already been confirmed.

It includes Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi, and Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera.

About 150 students will be enrolled into the Excel Academy from each of the three cities.
