4th of July fireworks may trigger anxiety for veterans

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – They usually trigger ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ on the Fourth of July, but for some, fireworks can trigger anxiety and flashbacks of combat.

Steven Lippincott served in the Air Force, including a stint in Vietnam. He compares hearing fireworks to being in a car crash. But he says there’s something even worse than hearing those loud booms – the smell.

This time of year can be especially difficult for veterans with or without PTSD

Who are vulnerable to panic attacks or flashbacks from fireworks, and it’s not just big displays – it’s the little neighborhood fireworks too.
