5 displaced after house fire in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — Firefighters battled a house fire overnight in New Bedford.

The New Bedford Fire Department said that they got calls about a fire at a three-family home on Madeira Avenue at about 12:30 a.m.

When crews got to the scene there were two people trapped on the top floor. Firefighters were able to safely get them out of the burning home.

The two were evaluated on the scene and did not need to go to the hospital.

Investigators found that the fire was caused by smoking materials inside of the first floor apartment.

Five people were left without a home due to the damages.
