5 sent to hospital after overnight boating accident in Westport, police investigating

WESTPORT, MASS (WLNE) – The Westport Police Department and Mass Environmental Police are currently investigating a boating accident that sent five people to the hospital on Wednesday night.

According to the Westport Fire Department, at approximately 10:48 PM a report of a marine vessel with 8 people on board had run aground off Cadmins Neck Road, with reported injuries.

The department arrived on the scene with 2 ambulances and the Westport police assisted with mutual aid.

Additional staffing was requested to get through heavy brush to reach the boat on the riverbank, which was approximately 20 feet below the yard of the nearest residence according to the fire department.

The department said once they made it to the boat, one person had injuries severe enough to require med-flight.

That person was sent to the Rhode Island Trauma Center.

One additional person was sent to Rhode Island Trauma and three were transported to local hospitals.

The people on the boat range in age from 14 to 24.
