PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Utility crews are working throughout Rhode Island to restore power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses following a massive snowstorm, and officials say it could be a few days before power comes back on.

Nearly 54,000 electrical customers remained affected by outages Sunday morning. More than 185,000 customers lost electricity at some point during the storm.

The utility reports that snow initially blocked access to power lines and equipment. In Newport and Bristol counties virtually every customer lost power during the storm.

Shelters have been set up throughout the state for people without power or heat.

National Grid has brought in hundreds of extra crews to restore power. The utility says the “vast majority'' of those affected by outages should have power restored by midnight Monday.
