Motor vehicle accident kills one in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, RI (WLNE) – Middletown police are currently investigating a fatal car accident that happened near a Pizzeria on Wednesday.

At 9:30 p.m, Middletown Police responded to a location near Carmellas’s Pizzeria, where they found a man, now identified as 48-year-old Robert Ivey, lying on the roadway after he was struck by a car operated by 68-year-old, Altina Lester, of Newport, suffering with significant injuries.

Officers from both Middletown and Portsmouth immediately helped Ivery on scene until Middletown Rescue arrived to transport him to Newport Hospital, where died from his injuries.  

According to police, the investigation revealed that Ivery walked off the sidewalk into southbound travel lane of West Main Road, when the vehicle was traveling south on West Main Road. 

The driver and several other witnesses stayed on scene where they cooperated with police.

No charges have been filed at this time.
