A Providence man is in a coma; his family seek answers, call for prayers
PROVIDENCE, R.I.– A Providence man is in a coma, and his family are hoping ABC6 viewers might help find an answer to how he wound up in the hospital, fighting for his life.
The family of 23-year-old Hayden Pina have few details about what happened to him on the night of July 15.
They know around 1 a.m., he was on his electric bicycle, in the area of the pedestrian bridge that connects South Water Street to Ship Street over the Providence River.
They know there was a noise complaint that brought police to the bridge, where a crowd of nearly 100 had gathered.
And they know that Hayden was found unconscious near his bicycle on South Water Street, in the middle of that crowd, who had no answers for police.
“When they were asking everyone what happened, no one would speak up, no one would answer what had happened,”said Cayleigh Pina, Hayden’s sister. “We just want to know, did he fall off his bike, was he doing a trick?”
“We just want to know,” Cayleigh said.
The family have turned to social media, using the hashtag #prayforhayden in the hopes that someone will come forward with answers.
Until there are answers, the family seeks strength through prayers for Hayden’s life.
“We just want everybody to come together, and get as many people praying for him, so hopefully he can pull through,” Caleigh said. “We know there are realities and miracles, and we are hoping for a miracle.”
The reality for Hayden right now is grim. He’s been in a medically induced coma at Rhode Island Hospital since the accident, the result of brain trauma and several strokes.
“They say he may not even wake up for months or years,” said Jenn Pina, Hayden’s mother. “For a mother to hear that, it’s not a good time.”
The family now hopes surveillance video from an area business will provide some clues. And they are praying that a witness will come forward with answers.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Providence Police Department at (401) 272-3121.
