ABC6 WeatherLab – Severe Weather
A Severe Weather Watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop, but dangerous weather may or may not occur. A Severe Weather Warning means conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop, AND dangerous weather is imminent or is occurring. When a warning is issued, it’s time to seek shelter.
A Severe Weather Warning will be issued if any of several criteria are met. Large hail 1″ diameter or greater, wind gusts greater than 58 mph, and flooding are a few of the situations that warrant a warning. Obviously, if a tornado is spotted, or if a tornado is indicated on doppler radar, a warning will also be issued.
Remember that when thunder roars, get indoors. And while indoors, you’re safest on the lowest level of your home, away from windows. Also be sure to limit your use of electronic devices during thunderstorms. It is sometimes wise to unplug expensive electronics during bad thunderstorms to protect against damage. Also, do not use the phone or faucets/showers during thunderstorms, just to be safe.
