ABC6 WeatherLab – Why Is Winter Cold?

What if I asked you at what point in its annual revolution around the sun is the Earth’s distance to the sun the shortest? The seemingly obvious answer is Summer. But the correct answer is actually Winter. So the Earth is closer to the sun in Winter than in Summer. So there must be some other factor that causes Winter to be cold and Summer to be warm. That “other factor” is the fact that the Earth is tilted on its axis. Winter occurs when the Earth is tilting away from the sun, and Summer occurs when the Earth is tilting toward the sun.
