CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – A correctional officer at the ACI in Cranston has been charged with simple assault after allegedly striking a handcuffed inmate.

Rhode Island State Police announced Wednesday that Mark Denis, 55, of Rehoboth, was arrested Tuesday after an investigation by RISP and RI Department of Corrections.

The investigation found that Denis struck an inmate in the face while the inmate was handcuffed awaiting a disciplinary procedure at the prison.

Denis surrendered himself to State Police Tuesday night. He was arraigned on one charge of Simple Assault.  He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance.

State Police said Denis has been on paid administrative leave since January.
