NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Christopher Pelagio, acting Chief of the North Providence Police Department, has been suspended indefinitely.

Mayor Charles Lombardi confirmed the suspension, but has not said why Pelagio is no longer on the job.

The Mayor only confirmed that the suspension does not involve any criminal investigation.

Pelagio was suspended Friday with pay.

The suspension comes after two no confidence votes by the Police Union and over 30 filed grievances since Pelagio took over as Chief in 2015.

Pelagio is also the subject of a sexual harassment lawsuit by the city’s highest ranking female officer.

Diana Perez alleges that Pelagio made inappropriate comments about her body and discriminated against her because she is a woman.

Most recently, Cranston Police began an investigation after an altercation between Pelagio and a Cranston police officer at a funeral service in May.

Acting Deputy Chief Charles Davey will fill Pelagio’s role until further notice.

The town will hold a special private meeting Monday night to discuss the issue.
