AG HOLDER: Men Arrested in Mass. Provided Cash to NYC Suspect

(AP) - Federal agents arrested two people and are searching locations in Mass. and New York on in connection with the failed Time Square bombing.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Attorney General Eric Holder says the men taken into custody in connection with the Times Square bombing attempt apparently provided money to would-be bomber Faisal
Shahzad.

Holder made the comment Thursday at a news conference.

Asked for details about the three men picked up Thursday morning, Holder said “we believe” there is evidence that they were providing Shahzad with funds.

Holder said “one of the things we are going to be trying to determine” is whether the men knew they were supplying funds for an act of terrorism.

BOSTON (AP) – A top Massachusetts law enforcement official says two men who have been taken into custody in the investigation into the failed Times Square car bomb are considered to have had a “direct connection” to the suspect, Faisal Shahzad.

The official says the men are believed to have provided money to Shahzad, but investigators are not sure whether they were witting accomplices or simply moving funds as is common between Middle Eastern and Central Asian nationals who live in the U.S. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

A spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says a third person was arrested in Maine, though two other law enforcement officials said that arrest was unrelated to the Times Square probe.

WATERTOWN, Mass. (AP) – The FBI says agents are searching several locations in the Northeast in connection with the failed Times Square car bomb.

An FBI spokeswoman said Thursday that there is “no known immediate threat to the public or any active plot against the United States.”

FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz would not confirm addresses, but police have cordoned off a small house in Watertown, about 10 miles west of Boston.

A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that search warrants are also being executed at homes on Long Island in New York. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to the AP because the investigation is ongoing.

Marcinkiewicz says two people have been taken into custody on alleged immigration violations in connection with the Boston-area raids.
