Air quality alert extends to Friday as smoke and haze remain
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The air quality alert that has been in place for the last three days will extend through Friday.
The alerts have been issued by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management as significant smoke from wildfires in Quebec continue to travel through the state.
Significant haze, reduced visibility, and the smell of burning wood have been present, while orange skies have affected areas like New York City.
As the Air Quality Alert remains in effect, the Department of Health recommended residents who may be sensitive to these particles to stay indoors with windows closed. Anyone outside should wear an N95 mask to reduce exposure and limit the amount of time spent outdoors.
Exposure to elevated fine particle pollution levels can affect both the lungs and heart which may cause breathing problems, aggravating asthma and other pre-existing lung diseases.
