Another COVID-19 Vaccine Could Be Imminent
CAMBRIDGE, MA (WLNE) – There’s more good news to report regarding a Coronavirus vaccine and this time there’s a local connection.
Officials with Massachusetts-based Moderna say they may know the effectiveness of their own vaccine within a matter of weeks. This news comes just a few days after Pfizer announced its vaccine is more than 90% effective and will be available for distribution by early 2021.
The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are similar. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says that the Pfizer news is also good news for the Moderna vaccine due to those similarities.
Moderna is conducting a clinical trial involving 30,000 participants, half receiving the vaccine and the other half receiving a placebo. That vaccine trial hit important benchmarks this week and Moderna could soon be in a position to declare its efficacy.
If approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the Moderna vaccine could be available for emergency use next month. It would be administered in two doses like Pfizer’s, however, doses would be given four weeks apart rather than three.
