Arctic air retreats!
The arctic blast thankfully is departing today! We will have seasonal weather through mid-week and then a warm up will actually give us above normal temperatures for the last few days of 2022 and this mild spell will last into the new year as well.
High pressure is dominating our weather this week and as it slides to the eastern seaboard from the plains over the next few days, we’ll see dry weather with sunny days. This surface high pressure system will give us a light westerly wind to start the week, but as it moves towards the east coast, we’ll see a southerly wind flow develop here in New England. This will pump in the milder air from Wednesday through Saturday. The downside is that a developing storm system late in the week will push our way with the unfortunate timing of New Years’ Eve and we could see rain showers dampen holiday festivities.
This is the pattern for the next 10 days with arctic cold retreating back to where it belongs…central and northern Canada, the arctic circle where these air masses are manufactured. The jet stream wind rises northward in the eastern U.S. This allows for the warm-up with milder air building at all levels of the atmosphere east of the Mississippi.
