Arizona Congresswoman Shot At Public Event

UPDATE: TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) – A congresswoman is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head and one of her aides is dead after a gunman opened fire outside a Tucson, Ariz. supermarket.

Hospital officials say Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has undergone surgery. An unknown number of her staff members have been injured.

U.S. Capitol police say the shooter is in custody.

One official says the attack was carried out with an automatic weapon.

Giffords had just begun her third term. The 40-year-old Democrat was re-elected in November, edging a tea party favorite. She was a member of the Arizona House and Senate before coming to Washington.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Congressional officials say Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has been shot in the head while meeting with constituents in her district in the area around Tucson.

These officials say as few as four and as many as a dozen people were wounded in the attack, including members of the Democratic congresswoman's staff. One official says one of the victims has died.

The severity of the injuries suffered by the others is not immediately known.

The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to do so on the record.
