Arraignment Set for RI Man Arrested in Mob Sweep

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A Rhode Island man arrested in a January mob roundup is set to face arraignment in federal court on racketeering charges.

Thomas Iafrate is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Providence Monday.

Prosecutors accuse Iafrate and the reputed former leader of the New England mob, Luigi “Baby Shacks” Manocchio, of extorting protection money from Rhode Island strip clubs and adult bookstores.

Last week, prosecutors added racketeering charges to the indictment against Iafrate and Manocchio.

Iafrate worked as a bookkeeper at the Cadillac Lounge strip club, where prosecutors say he collected protection money on Manocchio's behalf.

Iafrate and Manocchio were arrested in a sweep that netted over 120 suspected Northeast mobsters and mob associates.
